Rijeka Day Trips Without a Car: Opatija, Krk, Cres & More (2026)
Rijeka is easy to underestimate when planning a Croatia trip. Many travelers see it as a transport stop between Zagreb, the islands and the Adriatic coast, spend a night near the bus station, and move on.
That can be a mistake.
One of Rijeka’s biggest advantages is not only what is inside the city, but how many very different places you can reach from it without renting a car. In one direction you have the elegant Opatija Riviera. In another, the beaches and old towns of Krk Island. Boats and buses open up Cres, while shorter local routes connect Rijeka with places such as Kastav, Lovran and several smaller coastal towns.
The important part is choosing day trips that actually work with public transport.
A place can look close on a map and still be a poor car-free day trip if you need three connections, the final bus leaves before dinner, or the ferry timetable gives you barely enough time to explore.
This guide focuses on the opposite: realistic day trips from Rijeka without a car, including which ones are easy, which require more planning, and which destinations are better saved for a guided tour or an overnight stay.

For most first-time visitors, I would choose Opatija as the easiest day trip, Krk as the best full island day, and Cres only when the transport schedule works comfortably.
Rijeka’s tourism board specifically presents the city as a base for excursions and identifies bus connections to the Opatija Riviera, Kastav, coastal towns east of Rijeka and Krk.
Why Rijeka Is Such a Useful Base Without a Car
Rijeka sits at the northern end of Kvarner Bay, where mainland Croatia, the Istrian peninsula and several Adriatic islands come unusually close together.
That geography matters.
You can wake up in an urban port city, spend the morning walking beside Belle Époque villas, swim on an island in the afternoon and still sleep in the same Rijeka hotel.
It also helps that Rijeka's main transport facilities are close to the centre. The intercity bus station, railway connections and maritime terminal are all accessible from the central area, while much of central Rijeka itself is walkable.
This makes a central Rijeka base particularly useful if you do not drive.
You are not spending the first 40 minutes of every day reaching a distant transport terminal.
The trade-off
Rijeka is good for point-to-point trips.
It is less good for trying to connect four villages in one day.
Public transport works best when your plan looks like:
Rijeka → one main destination → Rijeka
rather than:
Rijeka → village → beach → viewpoint → second village → ferry port → Rijeka
That second type of itinerary usually becomes much easier with a rental car.
1. Opatija + Volosko — The Easiest Day Trip from Rijeka
If this is your first visit to Rijeka, Opatija should probably be your first day trip.
It is close enough that the day never feels dominated by transportation, but different enough from Rijeka to feel like you have travelled somewhere new.
Rijeka feels like a working port city.
Opatija feels like a historic Adriatic resort.
You get grand villas, landscaped gardens, waterfront hotels and one of the most enjoyable seaside promenades in the region.
Current intercity services cover the roughly 12-kilometre journey in around 20 minutes under normal conditions, although summer road traffic can increase journey times. Local coastal buses also connect Rijeka with the Opatija Riviera.
A Realistic Opatija Day
Do not rush straight to central Opatija.
A better plan is to include Volosko.

Morning: Volosko
Volosko is a former fishing village immediately north of Opatija.
Its little harbour, stone lanes and waterfront restaurants create a much smaller-scale atmosphere than central Opatija.
It also connects directly to the famous Lungomare.
The village remains known for its old fishing character, narrow streets and seaside setting.
Spend an hour wandering rather than trying to tick off attractions.
Then start walking south.
Late morning: Walk the Lungomare
The Franz Joseph I coastal promenade stretches for about 10 kilometres along the Opatija Riviera and links several coastal settlements.
You absolutely do not need to walk all of it.
For a Rijeka day trip, walking the Volosko–Opatija section gives you the experience without consuming the entire day.
Along the promenade you pass the sea, small bathing areas, historic villas and landscaped sections of the coastline.
Afternoon: Central Opatija
Once you reach Opatija, slow down.
This is not a place where you need a ten-stop sightseeing schedule.
Walk through the central gardens, see the waterfront, find the Maiden with the Seagull and leave time for coffee or lunch.
If the weather is warm, add swimming rather than another attraction.
Should you combine Opatija and Lovran?
Yes, but only if you prefer movement to slow travel.
You can continue farther along the Riviera toward Lovran by bus, but for a first visit I prefer Volosko + Opatija.
It creates a relaxed day instead of turning the Riviera into another checklist.
Best for: couples, first-time visitors, architecture, easy walks, food and relaxed sightseeing.
Skip it if: your priority is dramatic island scenery or hiking.
2. Krk Island — The Best Island Day Trip from Rijeka Without a Car
Krk is the most straightforward answer if you want to say:
“I want to visit a Croatian island from Rijeka, but I don't have a car.”
Unlike many Adriatic islands, Krk is connected to the mainland by bridge.
That means you can use a normal bus rather than building your entire day around a ferry connection.
Rijeka's tourism board describes Krk as easy to organize by bus, while current intercity services connect Rijeka directly with Krk Town. Depending on the particular service and traffic, allow roughly one to one and a half hours each way rather than planning around the fastest possible journey.
The biggest Krk mistake
Trying to see the entire island.
Krk is not one town.
You may see Krk Town, Vrbnik, Baška, Punat, Omišalj and several beaches on a map and assume you can connect all of them in a day.
Without a car, that quickly becomes unrealistic.
Choose one main destination
For a first-time car-free day trip, I would choose Krk Town.
Its compact historic centre gives you enough to do without requiring another bus as soon as you arrive.
The old town contains narrow stone streets, historic walls and the Frankopan Castle area, while the waterfront makes it easy to combine sightseeing with a relaxed meal or swim.
A Realistic Krk Town Day Trip
Morning
Take an early direct bus from Rijeka.
Once in Krk Town, start in the historic core before the middle of the day becomes hotter and busier.
Walk the old streets, harbour and waterfront.
Lunch
Do not spend the whole day moving.
Krk works better if you reserve a proper lunch break and enjoy the island atmosphere rather than immediately searching for another connection.
Afternoon
In warmer months, add a nearby beach.
Outside summer, use the afternoon for slower old-town exploration, waterfront walking and cafés.
What about Vrbnik?
Vrbnik is arguably more dramatic visually.
The old settlement sits high above the sea and is strongly associated with the island's wine tradition.
But it is not automatically a better public-transport day trip from Rijeka.
The more connections you introduce, the more vulnerable your return becomes.
If Vrbnik is your priority, check the actual local connection for your travel date before leaving Rijeka.

What about Punat?
Punat is attractive if you are interested in the coast, marina or the small Košljun islet nearby.
Again, however, I would not combine Krk Town, Punat and Vrbnik unless the day's transport works exceptionally well.
Best for: first island experience, history, coast, swimming.
Skip it if: you want to explore several Krk villages in one day without a tour.
3. Cres — Beautiful, but More Schedule-Sensitive
Cres is the day trip on this list that I would recommend with one major condition:
Check the exact return connection before leaving Rijeka.
Cres rewards the extra effort.
Its main town feels smaller and calmer than Rijeka, and the island has a wilder character than the more easily accessed parts of Krk.
The old centre of Cres Town is a maze of narrow streets and historic buildings around a sheltered bay, with beaches within walking distance of the centre.
That combination makes Cres Town itself workable without a car.
How to Reach Cres Without Driving
There are two relevant ideas to understand.
Option 1: Direct bus
Direct Rijeka–Cres bus connections exist.
The journey is roughly two hours on current services, depending on the specific route.
That is longer than Krk, but still feasible for a full day when departure times are useful.
Option 2: Maritime connections
Rijeka is also connected into Kvarner's maritime network, including services involving Cres.
Boat schedules vary by season, so this is one trip where I would never write an itinerary based solely on a generic travel time.
The 2026 Jadrolinija network includes a fast-boat line connecting Rijeka with Cres and other Kvarner islands, while the Krk–Cres vehicle ferry between Valbiska and Merag takes around 25 minutes.
For a traveler starting in Rijeka without a car, however, a route that requires first crossing Krk to Valbiska normally adds unnecessary complexity.
Use the simplest direct connection available on your travel date.
What to Do in Cres Town
Cres is not a place where I would build a minute-by-minute itinerary.
That would miss the point.
Explore the historic centre, walk around the harbour, find somewhere for lunch and leave time for the waterfront or a nearby beach.
The wider island also has places such as Beli, Valun and Lubenice, plus extensive hiking terrain, but they are a different logistical challenge without your own transport.
Should you attempt Lubenice from Rijeka in one day?
I would not build a first-time car-free itinerary around it.
Lubenice is exactly the kind of place that looks irresistible in photographs but can turn a simple day trip into a transport puzzle.
If your main dream is rural Cres rather than Cres Town, consider staying on the island or booking a tour.
Best for: quiet island atmosphere, old streets, slower travel.
Skip it if: you dislike planning around limited return connections.

4. Lovran — The Better Choice If Opatija Feels Too Polished
Lovran sits farther along the Opatija Riviera and works especially well for travelers who want something quieter than central Opatija.
Rijeka's tourist information lists Lovran among the destinations served by the coastal 32/32A bus routes.
The big advantage is flexibility.
You can use Lovran as:
- a standalone half-day or day trip,
- the end point of a longer coastal outing,
- or a second stop after Opatija.
Opatija or Lovran?
Choose Opatija if you want:
- grand resort architecture,
- landscaped gardens,
- a more polished atmosphere,
- and the classic first-time Riviera experience.
Choose Lovran if you want:
- a smaller historic centre,
- a quieter lunch,
- less sightseeing pressure,
- and a slower coastal afternoon.
My preferred combination
If you have already seen Opatija before, take the bus farther along the coast and make Lovran the main destination.
If it is your first time in Kvarner, keep Opatija as the main stop.
Trying to visit Volosko, Opatija, Ičići, Lovran and Mošćenička Draga in one day technically gives you more places.
It does not necessarily give you a better day.
5. Kastav — An Underrated Half-Day Escape
Not every day trip needs an island or beach.
Kastav is a useful alternative when:
- the weather is cloudy,
- you want a shorter outing,
- or you have only half a day free.
The old hill town sits inland above Kvarner Bay and gives you stone streets, historic atmosphere and elevated views without committing to a full island trip.
Rijeka's tourism board lists Kastav as reachable by local bus routes 18 and 18B.
Why Kastav works particularly well
There is little logistical pressure.
You are not dependent on a ferry.
You do not need to reach a distant beach before the heat becomes intense.
And you are close enough to Rijeka that returning early does not feel like a wasted day.
I would give Kastav around half a day rather than force an eight-hour itinerary around it.
It also works well if you have already completed the main city sights from 2 Days in Rijeka and suddenly gain an extra free afternoon.
Best for: history, views, quieter streets and shoulder-season trips.
6. Crikvenica — The Beach-Day Option
If your priority is less “historic day trip” and more “I want to spend most of the day by the sea,” look east toward Crikvenica.
Rijeka has bus connections toward Crikvenica and other coastal towns east of the city.
This is particularly useful in summer because Rijeka itself is not always the first Croatian city travelers imagine when planning a full beach day.
Crikvenica gives you a more conventional coastal-holiday atmosphere.
Who should choose Crikvenica over Krk?
Choose Crikvenica when:
- swimming is the priority,
- you do not care about “visiting an island,”
- you want a simpler beach-oriented day,
- or the Krk bus schedule does not suit you.
Choose Krk when:
- you want an island experience,
- historic surroundings matter,
- and you are happy to spend more of the day travelling.
You do not need both unless you have several spare days around Rijeka.
What About Mošćenička Draga?
Mošćenička Draga lies farther along the Opatija Riviera and can also be reached by selected coastal services.
It is attractive for its seaside setting and works particularly well when swimming is the priority.
However, it is one of those destinations where the timetable matters more than the map.
Rijeka tourism information lists it with coastal bus services 32 and 32A.
If you find a morning departure and comfortable return connection, it can make an excellent alternative to Opatija.
If the return schedule leaves you checking your phone every 20 minutes, choose Lovran instead.
Day Trips I Would NOT Prioritize Without a Car
This is the section many travel guides leave out.
A destination being physically near Rijeka does not mean it is a good public-transport day trip.

Učka Nature Park
Učka is visually close to the coast and excellent for hiking.
But the problem is reaching the exact trailhead you want at the exact time you need.
If your trip revolves around a specific mountain hike, a car, transfer or organised excursion is usually more reliable than trying to stitch together local transport.

Risnjak National Park
The same logic applies to Risnjak.
It is a worthwhile nature destination, but independent access to useful trailheads is much less straightforward than taking a bus to Opatija or Krk Town.
For serious hiking, transport should be planned around the trail—not the other way around.

Inland Istria
Places such as Motovun and Grožnjan look close to Rijeka geographically.
Without a car, however, a day can quickly become dominated by connections.
If those villages are high on your list, I would either:
- book a regional tour,
- rent a car for one day,
- or stay inside Istria.

Can it be done from Rijeka?
Potentially.

How Many Day Trips Should You Add to a Rijeka Stay?
This depends on how long you are staying.
2 nights in Rijeka
Do not add a full day trip unless Rijeka itself is only a base for you.

This is where a day trip starts making sense.
A good structure is:
Day 1: Rijeka centre and Trsat
Day 2: More Rijeka + coast
Day 3: Opatija or Krk
4 nights
This is probably the sweet spot.
You can experience Rijeka properly and still take one or two excursions.
For example:
Day 1: Rijeka
Day 2: Rijeka
Day 3: Opatija + Volosko
Day 4: Krk
5+ nights
Now Rijeka becomes a real regional base.
You could add Cres, Lovran or another Kvarner destination without feeling that you spent your entire Croatia trip commuting.
Where to Stay in Rijeka for Car-Free Day Trips
For this particular style of trip, location matters more than hotel luxury.
Stay reasonably close to central Rijeka.
You want to be able to walk to:
- the main bus departure area,
- the waterfront,
- central Rijeka,
- and your evening restaurants.
An accommodation bargain several kilometres outside the centre can stop feeling like a bargain when every day begins with an extra local bus.

Public transport on holiday is easy when you make one small change:

If the final acceptable bus leaves at 18:00, do not plan an activity that finishes at 17:50.

Good.
Bus to one island town, another bus to a second village, taxi to a ferry port, ferry to another island, then bus back?

Road journeys along the Croatian coast can take longer during the busiest summer periods.
Current operators explicitly warn that seasonal congestion can affect journey times on routes such as Rijeka–Opatija and Rijeka–Krk.
Build some tolerance into the schedule.
5. Keep one flexible day
If you are staying in Rijeka for four or five nights, do not decide months in advance that Cres must happen on Tuesday at all costs.
Use the clearest-weather day for the island or beach trip.
Use the less attractive weather day for Rijeka, Kastav, museums or cafés.
That small amount of flexibility usually produces a better trip than following an itinerary mechanically.
Rijeka Day Trips Without a Car: My Ideal 3-Trip Combination
If I had enough time in Rijeka for three excursions and wanted three genuinely different experiences, I would choose:
Trip 1 — Opatija + Volosko
Reason: easiest transport and a completely different visual character from Rijeka.
Trip 2 — Krk Town
Reason: straightforward island day with history, coast and swimming.
Trip 3 — Cres Town
Reason: quieter and less similar to the first two, provided the transport schedule works.
I would not choose Opatija, Lovran and Mošćenička Draga as my only three day trips.
They are all worthwhile, but the experiences overlap.
The strongest itinerary mixes Riviera + island + quieter island or nature.

Mistake 1: Treating Krk as one attraction
Krk is an island with multiple towns and very different areas.
Choose one focus.
Mistake 2: Assuming a ferry is always faster
A boat route may look more romantic but can be less practical depending on the season.
Compare the actual bus and maritime schedules.
Mistake 3: Planning from driving times
Google Maps may tell you a destination is 40 minutes away by car.
That is not the number that matters when you are travelling by public transport.
Mistake 4: Returning too late
The best sunset in Croatia will feel less magical if you realise your final usable connection has already left.
Mistake 5: Spending every day outside Rijeka
Rijeka should not become merely the place where you sleep.
Korzo, Trsat, the market, Molo Longo, museums and the city's own coastline deserve time too.
